Nerd By Northwest #1:  True Grit

Cartoonist's Commentary:

This is the very first NBNW strip that I drew back in early 2016, at a time and a job where I could feel my creativity and soul withering away. I was stuck spending my work days in a high security work environment and in an office with no windows, no personal electronics allowed, no internet, and work tasks that were most often dull and routine.  The only distractions were BS'ing with fellow coworkers (one of the few positive aspects of the job), an FM radio which only received a few stations well (and not any really good ones), and a handful of streaming cable news stations available through the gov't intranet we used (it being election season at the time I learned to hate Fox News and CNN even more than I already did).  So without my podcasts, internet, and nothing entertaining to look forward to other than catching a glimpse of some Fox News anchorwoman's cleavage, I brought in paper and pencils and started drawing.  By the time I left the corporate world in the summer of 2016, I found myself with a handful of roughly drawn strips and a bunch of ideas for more.

As for the strip itself, it's simply poking fun at the "image" that Alaska and Alaskans tend to be given in popular media.  The unimpressive reality is that at least half of Alaskans live in the cities and are often almost as pampered and soft as many other Americans.  Anyway, to me it seemed like an amusing enough way to introduce the setting and the main characters.

Nerd By Northwest #2:  Change Bad, Mini Good

(H/T to 'Doctor X'!)

Cartoonist's Commentary:

Cam's complaint about new versions of D&D are taken almost word for word from one of my friends who goes by the handle of "Doctor X". Personally I thought he was being a little dramatic... until some years back when I got my first look at D&D 4th edition (the horror, oh the horror...)

Nerd By Northwest #3:  Fae-urry

Cartoonist's Commentary:

Yeah it's fashionable to poke fun at Zima and I'm obviously not above that.  But at the risk of confirming my total lack of cool to the public, to tell the truth I was perfectly fine with drinking Zima back in the day.  Yeah it was too sweet, but IMHO that was preferable to most of the "Ice" beers that had burst into popularity in the 90's.  Thankfully I've been exposed to a much wider range of beers and alcoholic beverages since then.  But you know what?  If a Zima were offered to me, I just might drink it for nostalgia's sake.

P.S. - This got me curious to look up Zima on Wikipedia, and I was surprised to discover MillerCoors actually did a limited re-release of Zima this last summer.  Being overseas that summer I had no clue this was going on.  Wikipedia goes on to say it's likely they'll be bringing it back next summer due to its success this past summer.  Does that mean these are the end times?

Nerd By Northwest #4:  Hustlin'

Cartoonist's Commentary:

This is a not-so veiled reference to a recent scandal where the head of a defense contracting company (going by the name of "Fat Leonard" of all things) was found to not only have defrauded the Navy but had also bribed a number of high-ranking Navy officers with lavish hotel stays, extravagant dinners, expensive gifts, and even prostitutes in exchange for sensitive information used for monetary gain.  Sadly, my time at defense contractors was FAR less interesting  :(

Nerd By Northwest #5:  Sharp Dressed Man

Cartoonist's Commentary:

This is based on an actual event and coworker during my short stint in Geek Squad.  The clip-on ties were standard issue at the time, and to my knowledge I was one of only two people at that Geek Squad who wore a normal tie.  Anyway, that individual was living proof there ARE guys out there with less game than myself.  :)

Nerd By Northwest #25:  Happy Halloween 2017!

Cartoonist's Commentary:

While this special bonus Halloween strip finally answers the question of what the webcomic would look like in color, it does beg yet another question: Does a squirt gun filled with booze count as an open container if it's kept holstered and fastened down?  ;)
